frequently asked questions…
+ I WANT A MURAL. HOW DO WE GET STARTED?
firstly, email me at marisadengate@gmail.com so we can set up a meeting (virtual or local). we can discuss the space, color preferences, and other ideas/inspiration you have. be sure to jot down measurements of the space.
from there, I will piece together some sketches/designs & color palettes to work towards a final plan for your space.
+ How much are murals?
mural costs are determined by square footage, ranging from $25-$30 per square foot range, with a $1,000 minimum. final costs will vary by price depending on complexity and full scope. cost includes all paint supplies and materials.
a 50% deposit is due upfront during the design phase and then the remaining 50% upon completion of the project. your non-refundable deposit goes towards the total cost.
*if specialty paint or supplies are needed, additional costs will be added to the final bill (i.e. anti-graffiti paint for high traffic areas, scaffolding, etc.)
+ Do you take personal commissions?
yes! I focus primarily on food/holiday themed commissions, for example, illustrated recipes. I do not do family/pet portraits of any sort.
+ How did you become an illustrator?
I've been a creative person my entire life — from the time I could hold a pencil. once I reached high school I become serious about a career in the art world. I enrolled in the Stamps School for Art & Design in 2018 with no particular focus — just an overwhelming curiousity about the world. halfway through university I realized that the animation route was too tedious for me, so I switched to the illustration route and never looked back. after graduating from college, I spent my post-grad quarter-life crisis working on my style and my craft, which led me to illustrating educational children's books, posters, and several commissions. as it stands now, my interests in illustration are in editorial, publishing, packaging, and murals. however, I'm open to most things thrown my way.
+ How did you find your style?
it's a long story that is still being written. I started out doing very earthy, natural aesthetics, largely inspired by William Morris's floral work and the Art Nouveau movement. I did a big 180 in the past two years since rediscovering my love for bright colors and funky patterns. I've always stressed the importance of texture in my work, especially with the brushes I use in my digital work. My thoughts on finding your own style: it really comes down to knowing yourself, your likes, dislikes, and compassion for yourself. style is always evolving. it is the characteristics of your work that make it unique to yourself. don't ever be afraid to experiment — it's what keeps it interesting.
+ What materials do you use?
though I work primarily on my iPad these days, I still love to go analog. my go to materials are:
• holbein acyrla gouache
• caran d'ache neocolor II pastels
• caran d'Ache Colored Pencils
• uni-posca paint markers
• strathmore and canson mixed media paper
• procreate for iPad
• affinity Designer for iPad
+ What are your favorite colors?
the color of Torii gates, fresh leaves, vintage salmon-pink bathroom tile, butter yellow, chartreuse, and cornflower blue are just a few of my favorites.
